Tsavo West National Park
Experience the Untamed Soul of Tsavo West National Park
Brief introduction
Tsavo West National Park is ideal for those who enjoy beautiful scenery as well as wildlife because of its waterholes, the black lava fields, the green oases, and the calm safari tracks. You could spot a hippo emerging from the water at Mzima Springs with the volcanic hills in the background.Brief history
Tsavo was made into a national park in 1948. It is divided into an eastern and a western section by the corridor that runs from Nairobi to Mombasa. At present, the western part of the park extends over approximately 9,065 square kilometres (3,500 square miles) in southeastern Kenya. The Kenya–Uganda Railway became well known because of the lions, famously known as the man-eaters of Tsavo, which caused problems during its construction in 1898. At present, conservation work is aimed at preserving elephants, their habitats, and the endangered black rhinos. The Ngulia Rhino Conservation area, which was established in the 1980s, was incorporated into the bigger Tsavo West Rhino Sanctuary in 2025.
Location and getting there
The park is located in Taita-Taveta County, between Nairobi and the coast, with Mtito Andei being the main northern entrance. Chyulu, Maktau, Ziwani, and Lake Jipe gates serve the other routes.Nairobi is approximately 240 kilometers from Mtito Andei by road, and the journey takes between four and five hours.
Starting in Mombasa, the distance to Mtito Andei is between 203 km and 210 kilometres and the journey usually lasts between 3 hours and 55 minutes and 4 hours and 30 minutes, depending on traffic and the gate you take.
The Madaraka Express stops at Mtito Andei, roughly 3 hours from Nairobi, followed by a road transfer to your lodge.
Flights from Wilson Airport to airstrips such as Kilaguni, Finch Hattons or Ol Donyo Lodge. A flight time of between 50 minutes and 1 hour.
Wildlife & terrain
- Volcanic cones, acacia woodlands, dense thorn scrub, open plains and forests supplied with springs are all found in Tsavo West National Park; the black Shetani Lava Flow is visible against the green of Mzima Springs from the Ngulia Hills and Chaimu Crater.
- When it comes to elephants and buffalo, be on the lookout for herds that have red dust on them near water.
- As for predators, lions, leopards, and at times cheetahs live in the area, but the dense bush makes it difficult to spot them.
- Black rhinos: Although they are a major focus of conservation efforts, you cannot be sure of seeing them, and access may be restricted.
- Other mammals such as giraffes, zebras, the lesser kudu, the fringe-eared oryx, hippos and crocodiles live in different habitats.
The variety of birds includes over 600 species, such as raptors, hornbills, and migratory songbirds which pass through the Ngulia area in November and December.
Best time to visit
June to October is generally the best period for seeing game since the tracks are dry, the vegetation is less dense, and the animals go to the permanent water sources.Although January and February are also dry and warm, the midday temperature can become very hot. The longer rains occur during this time.
November and December usually have shorter showers. The scenery in the green season is impressive, birdwatching can be good, and some lodges might have reduced rates.
On the other hand, the thick bush can conceal mammals, and rain may prevent access to remote roads or viewpoints.
Activities to do
- For game drives, you will be accompanied by a specialist guide who will modify the route according to wildlife sightings, photo opportunities, and your preferred speed.
- On the Mzima Springs trip, you should walk along the shaded paths with a ranger or a guide and keep an eye out for hippos, crocodiles, and fish. The underwater viewing chamber has specific hours and can close down for maintenance or if the water visibility is poor, particularly during the rainy season or when there are algae blooms. The walking trails are open every year.
- For volcanic sightseeing, take photographs of the Shetani Lava Flow, Chaimu Crater, and Roaring Rocks, and only go to viewpoints or trails that have been approved by the park staff.
- For a trip with a focus on rhinos, find out information regarding black rhino protection near Ngulia and ask your guide which visitor routes are currently open in accordance with KWS rules.
- Experience birdwatching by visiting the waterholes, the edges of the woodlands, and Ngulia during the period when migrants are present. Take binoculars and, if you can, travel with a specialist guide.
Conservancies, communities & responsible tourism
The Kenya Wildlife Service is in charge of the national park, while adjacent community lands allow animals to move around within the wider Tsavo ecosystem. At the northern boundary of the park, the Kamungi Conservancy establishes a wildlife buffer and supports various community initiatives aimed at habitat protection, providing local employment and reducing human-wildlife conflicts.
The LUMO Community Wildlife Sanctuary, situated between Tsavo West and other wildlife areas in Taita-Taveta, helps to protect a vital elephant corridor; tourism and conservation partnerships in this area support local employment and community development. Both the LUMO and Kamungi conservancies operate outside the park, and each has its own set of visitor rules.
The Tsavo Trust and the Taita Taveta Wildlife Conservancies Association are involved in conservation and community initiatives.
Entrance fee
Kenya Wildlife Service currently publishes these park-entry charges per person, categorized by visitor status:- International non-residents: USD 80 per adult; USD 40 per child.
- Other African citizens: USD 40 per adult; USD 20 per child.
- East African citizens: KES 1,000 per adult; KES 500 per child.
- Kenya residents: KES 1,350 per adult; KES 675 per child.
What to expect
Early mornings can be expected, together with some dusty roads and long drives between the various attractions. You should plan to stay for two or three nights, though you might need a longer period if you intend to visit the remote Lake Jipe.Pack light-colored, neutral clothing, a warm item for the morning, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, binoculars, and insect repellent. It is also necessary to pack a telephoto lens, extra batteries, and a camera dust cover. Since tsetse flies are present in wooded areas, wearing light-coloured clothes is a good idea.
You should consult a travel-health professional regarding vaccinations, malaria precautions, and the requirements for entry. Mobile signal coverage may be poor, and some lodges have only limited connectivity. Families need to verify the age rules for the walks and excursions, and guests with mobility problems should enquire as to vehicle access, room arrangements, and the presence of uneven paths close to the springs.

Ashnil Aruba Lodge
The Ashnil Aruba Lodge is set up right next to a source of water in a park where water is a rare commodity. It lies overlooking the Aruba Dam in southern Tsavo East National Park, where during the dry season the dam functions like a magnet, attracting elephants which go there to drink and buffalo that wallow in the shallow waters, often seen from your veranda.Aruba is a comfortable mid-range lodge operated by the Ashnil Hotels group, and the true luxury it offers is its location, since you wake up deep in the park with the wildlife right outside your door.Even if you are going on safari for the first time, Aruba will be suitable for you. It is also a good choice for couples who would prefer a quiet veranda to one that is crowded with people, for photographers, families, and beach holidaymakers who are leaving Diani or Mombasa for a short stay. However, if you want plunge pools or a spa, then you should select a different luxury lodge.Getting to the lodgeThe lodge is situated approximately 30 km east of Voi Gate, the principal entrance onto the Nairobi to Mombasa highway, and the one-hour drive from the gate marks the start of your first game drive. A road trip of 330 km from Nairobi to Voi Gate takes between five and six hours, whereas the Madaraka Express train gets you to Voi station in about five hours, at which point your guide will be there to drive you into the park. For those coming from Mombasa, the distance is roughly 160 km, or 2.5 to 3 hours by road, and when starting from Diani Beach it takes about four hours via either Mombasa or the Kwale route. If you are short on time, you can take charter flights to the park airstrips as part of our fly safari.Rooms and accommodationThe rooms are spread across the grounds, with many of them facing the dam or the open bush. Each room has a shower that is en-suite, mosquito nets, and a private veranda which is suitable for slow mornings enjoyed with binoculars.Double roomOne large bedCouples, honeymooners and older travelers.Twin roomTwo single bedsFriends, colleagues, parent and teen or two solo guests sharing to avoid the single supplementTriple roomA double and a single, or three singlesA family with one young child or three adults sharing costsFamily accommodationConnecting rooms or a larger unitFamilies of four or more and multi-generation groups; book early for holidaysSingle occupancyDouble or twin for one guestSolo travelers and photographers; a single supplement appliesFacilities and diningThe pool provides a cool break from the heat during the drives, and since the restaurant and bar are situated over the water, you usually get to have lunch with the elephants. At these times, the animals gather around the dam and the river. The rains, which occur from March to May and also in November and December, make the bush turn green and result in reduced traffic and quieter roads, although the tracks may become muddy and the wildlife disperses. Please ask us about any seasonal closures before you decide.Children policyChildren are allowed at the Ashnil Aruba Lodge. The following points should be known by families:Ages and ratesChild rates depend on age band, and young children sharing with parents usually pay less; Halo Safaris confirms the current age bands and discounts in your quoteRoomsFamilies can choose triple rooms, connecting rooms, or family units; request cots in advanceSupervisionThere is no kids' club or babysitting, so an adult must stay with children at all times, especially at the pool and after dark, as wildlife can move through campGame drivesLong, hot drives tire young children; a private vehicle lets you cut drives shortMeals and healthThe kitchen can prepare simpler meals with notice, and children need age-appropriate malaria advice from a travel clinicPractical informationThe electricity here is 240 volts and uses UK-style three-pin plugs, so make sure you have your adapter with you it will allow you to charge your gadgets.Mobile signal is patchy across the parkThe ground is generally level, but the paths are not. If you are using shared mobility, please let us know in advance so that easy access to the park is possible.Since Tsavo is a region where malaria is found, you should visit a travel clinic and make sure you have insurance that includes evacuation coverage because the nearest hospital is in Voi.The peak months are July and August, so if you want to book with us it's best to reserve your room as early as possible before they are all taken.Length of stayWith two nights you have three or four drives; with three nights you can fit in a full-day drive to Lugard Falls and the Galana River; and with four nights or more you have the opportunity to use the pool and go on a day trip to Tsavo West.Combining with other destinationsLocated between Nairobi and the coast, Tsavo East fits well into a longer trip. You could combine it with Amboseli Park to have the elephants set against the background of Kilimanjaro, go with Tsavo West to see the volcanic hills and the springs, or end your journey with a week spent on sand and sea at Diani Beach. We will be able to arrange a tailored itinerary for you so that you can link your visit to Aruba with other destinations.Plan your Tsavo East safari with usWilling to turn your dreams of a Kenya safari into reality without having to deal with all the planning? We will take care of all the details, including arranging your private transport and guided game drives, and booking your best room with a view of the dam at Ashnil Aruba Lodge in the middle of the wildlife area, right from the campgrounds.
