Experience the Untamed Soul of Meru National Park

Brief Introduction

Meru National Park provides a relaxed kind of safari, featuring red earth tracks, rivers bordered by palms, open grasslands, and the opportunity to see wildlife without having to deal with large numbers of people. Situated to the east of Mount Kenya, this tranquil region is ideal for tourists who value both room and wildlife.

Brief History

The park was set up in 1966 and gained international fame because of Born Free, the account of Elsa the lioness, who was helped by the conservationists George and Joy Adamson to be returned to the wild. Elsa's grave is still a significant place for tourists who are interested in Kenya's conservation history.

In the 1980s, the number of wild animals fell as a result of poaching, but thanks to conservation measures and the establishment of a secure rhino sanctuary, the park has recovered. The park is now committed to protecting both the animals and their habitat.

Location and Getting There

The park lies in eastern Kenya, extending over an area of about 870 square kilometers (336 square miles), situated beyond Mount Kenya and near the Nyambene Hills; the towns of Meru and Maua are typically used as road entry points, and the majority of visitors go through Murera Gate.

There are two practical ways to arrive:

  • For a private road safari, the drive from Nairobi is about 348 kilometres (216 miles) through Nyeri, Nanyuki and Meru and usually takes between six and seven hours, the length of the journey depending on how many stops are made and the state of the roads. Maua is about 35 kilometres (22 miles) from Murera Gate and there is an alternative route via Embu which goes to Ura Gate.
  • For a scheduled flight or a private charter, light-aircraft services leave Wilson Airport in Nairobi, the flying time being approximately one hour on appropriate routes; the airstrips involved are Mulika, Kinna, and Mughwongo, the selection depending on the lodge, the airline's operations, and the landing permissions.

Wildlife & Terrain

The landscape within Meru National Park changes from dry bush and wooded savanna to include plains populated by acacia trees, doum palms, and dense riverside forests, and there are numerous spots suitable for taking photographs, particularly when the animals come to drink.

Look out for:

  • Large mammals: Elephants, buffalo, reticulated giraffes, zebras, waterbuck, hippos, and various antelope.
  • Predators: Lions and elusive leopards, with cheetahs also possible; patience matters more than a rigid sighting checklist.
  • Rhinos: Both black and white rhinos inhabit the protected sanctuary, making a dedicated visit worthwhile.
  • Northern species: Beisa oryx, gerenuk, and Grevy’s zebra may reward observant visitors.
  • Birdlife: More than 400 recorded species, including kingfishers, hornbills, and fish eagles.

Best Time to Visit

June through October is generally the best period for game drives, since then the tracks are dry, the grass is short, and the animals come to the water sources. Safari days with sunny and clear weather are also good in January and February.

From March through May, the rains are heavy and last a long time, while in November and December the rainfall is less. The greener months are ideal for birdwatchers and photographers, but heavy rain can cause certain roads to become difficult.

Meru is generally quiet all year round. Although some lodges provide cheaper rates during the off-season, your total cost will still depend on the dates of your holiday, the availability of flights, and the policies of each property.

Activities to Do

You can balance active adventures with relaxing time at your camp each day:

  • Private game drives: Set out at dawn and late afternoon for changing light, cooler temperatures, and the best chances of spotting active animals.
  • Rhino sanctuary excursions: Spend dedicated time searching for black and white rhinos with a knowledgeable guide.
  • Birdwatching and river photography: Follow established tracks near watercourses for birds, hippos, dramatic scenery, and quieter wildlife moments.
  • Conservation-history visits: Include Elsa’s grave and other accessible heritage sites linked to the Adamsons.
  • Guided nature walks: Arrange approved, escorted walks where permitted, rather than exploring wildlife areas independently.
  • Cultural encounters: Visit community-approved experiences outside the park, subject to local hosts’ availability and consent.

In Meru National Park, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) manages all activities that happen after dark. Night game drives and other night-time experiences are only possible with KWS approval and must be run by authorized operators. We will confirm availability and secure the needed permissions before including these activities in your safari itinerary.

We prioritize responsible tourism by following KWS rules, working with authorized guides, respecting wildlife habitats, and ensuring all our activities are safe and sustainable.

The park forms part of the larger Meru Conservation Area, which also comprises Kora National Park and the adjacent Bisanadi, Mwingi, and Rahole reserves. These protected areas contribute to the conservation of wildlife habitat outside the main park boundary and must not be mistaken for privately operated tourist conservancies.

It is advised that guests use the approved roads, avoid single-use plastics, respect the space of animals, and always ask for permission before taking photographs of local people.

Entrance Fees

Kenya Wildlife Service currently publishes the following daily park-entry rates:

  • International non-residents: USD 70 per adult; USD 40 per child.
  • Other African citizens: USD 40 per adult; USD 20 per child.
  • Kenyan / East African citizens: KES 800 per adult; KES 500 per child.
  • Kenya residents: KES 1,100 per adult; KES 675 per child.

What to Expect

You can look forward to spending the mornings early, having warm afternoons, encountering varying road conditions, and enjoying calm drives with only a small number of other vehicles. If you stay for three nights you will have enough time to visit the rhino sanctuary, explore the river areas, and take in the quiet.

Take along some light, neutral-coloured clothes, a warm item for the mornings, sun protection, sturdy shoes, insect repellent, binoculars, and extra batteries for the camera. It would be useful to have a zoom lens because you will be seeing the animals from a distance.

Before you leave, you should discuss malaria prevention, vaccinations, and any necessary yellow fever documentation with a qualified travel-health professional. However, phone coverage differs in the more remote areas, and the lodge's Wi-Fi may be unreliable.

Possible Safari Combinations

Through our safari itineraries, we are able to connect Meru with other areas of Kenya, ensuring that your trip never seems rushed.

  • Meru and Samburu (5–6 days): Contrast palm-lined rivers with Samburu’s dry-country wildlife and striking landscapes.
  • Meru, Ol Pejeta, and Laikipia (6–8 days): Combine the rhino sanctuary with broader conservation experiences and elegant private-lodge stays.
  • Meru and Maasai Mara (7–9 days): Pair a secluded wilderness safari with the Mara’s expansive plains and predator-rich viewing.
  • Meru and Diani Beach (7–10 days): Follow wildlife drives with Indian Ocean relaxation, using carefully planned flight connections.

A three-day and two-night trip gives only a basic overview, whereas a four-day and three-night one is more satisfactory.

Plan Your Meru National Park Safari

Avoid the busy safari routes and instead experience the riverside wilderness, have excellent guides, and enjoy the freedom to explore on your own schedule. We can arrange a private Meru safari for you, including a dedicated guide, a luxury camp, and the option to travel by road or to fly in. You can provide us with your dates, the size of your group, and your preferences regarding comfort using our trip-planning form, or you can call +254 762 444 777 to obtain a custom itinerary and quote.

Breakfast is convenient before an early Ol Pejeta departure, and dinner lets guests avoid driving into Nanyuki town after a long day.The Sports Bar and Poolside Lounge offer a casual setting for coffee, drinks and live sports, giving families, groups and self-drive guests a place to relax beyond overnight accommodation. Please confirm your selected board basis, meal periods, restaurant service and included drinks for your travel dates.Guests can enjoy the swimming pool, gym, sauna and steam bath during their stay. The beauty parlor, barbershop and massage treatments offer additional wellness options after travel or outdoor activities. Massage treatments and some services may incur extra charges and should be booked in advance.Day trips from NanyukiAberdare Prestige & Royal Cottages serves as a base for day trips, rather than offering on-site wildlife viewing. For rhino conservation and game drives, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a full-day trip from Nanyuki. Plan an early departure, confirm your preferred gate, and reserve entry and activities in advance. Travel time varies based on your route and itinerary.Solio Game Reserve, Kenya’s first private rhino sanctuary, is home to both black and white rhinos. It works well for travellers seeking a wildlife-focused day without a longer in-conservancy stay.Mount Kenya offers scenic views, forest walks and day hikes. For active groups, Team Hiking in Kenya Safaris offers hiking routes and permits. Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve, with trails, a canopy walkway and blue pools, usually requires a full day to explore.Ol Jogi and Lolldaiga suit specialist Laikipia stays better than casual day trips. We advise on transfer times, access requirements and whether a private vehicle or guide is recommended.Building a Nanyuki and Samburu safari routeNanyuki serves as an ideal first or final night stop for road journeys or domestic flights. Guests may arrive from Nairobi and spend one or two nights visiting Ol Pejeta, Solio or Mount Kenya. They can then continue north to Samburu or transfer to a Laikipia conservancy for a more immersive safari experience. This itinerary offers a straightforward sequence: arrival or stopover in Nanyuki, an optional day trip, followed by a wildlife-focused stay in Laikipia or Samburu. We coordinate transfers, conservancy entry times, and accommodation arrangements to minimize backtracking.Families, self-drive travelers and eventsRoyal Family and Villa Cottages offer families, friends and small groups shared living areas, avoiding separate standard rooms. Secure parking and the Nyeri–Nanyuki Highway location make the property convenient for self-drive guests arriving from Nairobi, Mount Kenya or other Laikipia destinations. For meetings, incentives and celebrations, the property offers two indoor conference venues: a main hall for up to 1,000 delegates and a smaller room for up to 200, depending on seating. Both venues have air conditioning, data projectors, televisions, sound systems, telephones and wireless microphones, providing a functional setting for conferences, product launches, training sessions and presentations. The grounds are suitable for team-building activities, and the accommodation, pool and dining facilities allow corporate groups to meet and relax in one location. Please confirm your package, meeting-room layout, meals and breaks, equipment, accommodation allocation, activity program and event support before booking. The property also offers event support, sound and PA equipment, secure parking and customized seating for celebrations as per the agreed package. For itineraries tailored to specific group interests, our private safari in Kenya guide shows how Nanyuki can fit between Nairobi, Laikipia and Samburu. The property is less suitable for travelers seeking highly private or remote safari accommodation.Length of stayA one-night stay is ideal for a road-trip stop or airstrip layover. Two nights allow a full day in Ol Pejeta, Solio or Mount Kenya, plus time to enjoy the property’s facilities. Consider a third night for a slower family stay or a longer excursion, such as Ngare Ndare Forest.December to March and July to October typically offer drier road and hiking conditions. April to May and November are generally wetter, resulting in greener landscapes.Booking considerationsConfirm the selected room or cottage category, bedding, occupancy, cots and interconnecting-room requirements.Check the chosen board basis, meal inclusions and current dining arrangements.Confirm airstrip or road transfers, collection time and any applicable charges.Reserve conservancy visits, park activities and specialist guides early, particularly for Ol Pejeta and restricted-access Laikipia experiences.Share accessibility, dietary, spa and event requirements before travel.Add Nanyuki to your Kenya safari routeAberdare Prestige & Royal Cottages is ideal for a one- or two-night Nanyuki stop before continuing to Ol Pejeta, Mount Kenya, Samburu or a Laikipia conservancy.
