During a three-day safari, your guide will drive you across plains covered in red dust, where elephants dust themselves using the park's iron-rich soil. You can also see maneless lions, a species found only in Tsavo East. It makes no difference whether this is your first safari or you are taking a break from a beach holiday, since three days gives you two full days for game drives without spending too much time on the road.
Planning your trip
Three-day safaris in Tsavo East are generally road trips starting in Nairobi, Mombasa or Diani, with the drive covering about 4 hours from the Kenyan coast and around 6 hours from Nairobi. Pack lightly and use soft-sided bags, as many lodges restrict luggage size. The best time for game viewing is during the dry seasons, that is, from June to October and from January to February, when the animals come together near water. In the rainy months, some tracks may become muddy, but the park looks greener and is less dusty.

Your Safari Schedule
Day 1
Leave Nairobi with your Halo Safaris & DMC driver-guide and follow the Mombasa road toward Tsavo East. As the city falls away, the scenery opens into dry plains, small trading towns and the rugged landscapes of southeastern Kenya.
After lunch and check-in at the lodge or camp, take your first drive into the park. The afternoon route introduces Tsavo's rust-colored earth and broad horizons, where elephants often appear dusted red. Giraffes, zebras, buffaloes and antelopes are also regularly seen, with predators becoming more active toward sunset.
Return for dinner and a quiet evening in the wilderness.

Day 2
Set out after breakfast with the whole day available for exploration. Rather than following a fixed loop, the guide will shape the route around recent sightings, seasonal water sources and road conditions.
Possible highlights include Aruba Dam, the Galana River and Mudanda Rock. If conditions allow, continue to Lugard Falls, where the Galana cuts through channels of sculpted rock. These contrasting habitats attract elephants, hippos, crocodiles and a rich variety of birds, while the open country offers opportunities to search for lions, leopards and cheetahs.
Pause for a picnic lunch in the park, then continue at an unhurried pace before returning to the lodge or camp for dinner and a second night in Tsavo.

Day 3
Enjoy breakfast, check out and visit a nearby community village if this experience is included in the confirmed program. The visit offers a personal introduction to local traditions, everyday life and handmade beadwork or crafts.
Begin the drive back to Nairobi after the visit, with a self-sponsored lunch stop along the way. Arrival is expected in the evening, followed by drop-off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a Nairobi hotel or another agreed location.
