Lake Nakuru National Park
Experience the Untamed Soul of Lake Nakuru National Park
Brief Introduction
In the early morning, the misty acacia woods, the cliffs, and the white rhinos feeding by the water are all on display at Lake Nakuru National Park. Sometimes the flamingos contribute a touch of pink, but the park has plenty to offer beyond birdwatching; because of its size, it is easy to do wildlife photography, even on a short Kenya safari.
Brief History
Protection started in 1961 when a section of the lakeshore was designated as a bird sanctuary. The protected area was extended in 1964, was raised to the status of a national park in 1968, and had increased to about 188 square kilometers (73 square miles) by 1974.
The Kenya Wildlife Service established the nation's first government-operated rhino sanctuary in this area in 1987 with the aim of providing protection for both black and white rhinos. This lake is also included in the Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 together with Lakes Elementaita and Bogoria.
Location and Getting There
The park is located next to Nakuru city in Kenya's Great Rift Valley and is about 156 kilometres (97 miles) northwest of Nairobi; the Main Gate is roughly 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) from the city centre, while the Lanet and Nderit Gates serve as other access points.
The drive from Nairobi on the A104 usually takes about three to four hours, but it may take longer if there is traffic or if you stop to take in the scenery. The journey from Lake Naivasha takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Wildlife & Terrain
Lake Nakuru National Park has a mix of landscapes, including alkaline water, open grasslands, yellow-barked fever trees, acacia woods, rocky hills, and scenic viewpoints. About 450 bird species live here, so birdwatching is enjoyable even if flamingos are few.
Typical wildlife highlights include:
- White rhinos: Often seen grazing on open ground; their more solitary black-rhino relatives are harder to spot in denser vegetation.
- Rothschild’s giraffes: Distinctive giraffes browsing woodland edges, alongside buffalo, zebras, waterbuck, impalas, and baboons.
- Predators: Lions and leopards inhabit the park, but sightings require luck and patient tracking.
- Waterbirds: Greater and lesser flamingos, pelicans, fish eagles, cormorants, and seasonal migrants.
It is not true that large flocks of flamingos are always around. Changes in the depth and salt concentration of the water have an effect on algae growth and therefore on the areas where the birds feed in the Rift Valley lakes.
If you enjoy photography, you will find the grasslands good for taking pictures of rhinos, and Baboon Cliff and the Out of Africa Lookout provide broad views of the lake.
Best Time to Visit
Road conditions and wildlife viewing are generally good from June through September and from January to February. Long game drives are best enjoyed in the cool mornings, while the midday light is suitable for taking photographs by the lake.
The wettest period is from March to May, and from October to December the rains are usually shorter. The landscape remains green, and the birds are active, but high-water levels can cause some lakeshore paths to be closed.
Since flamingos do not have a fixed schedule, it is a good idea to look at the latest lake updates before organizing a trip that focuses on seeing them. Lodge prices are generally lower when it's not peak travel or holiday season, although each property determines its own rates.
Activities to Do
- Private game drives: Explore at sunrise and late afternoon with a dedicated guide who can adapt your route for rhinos, predators, and photography.
- Birdwatching: Search shoreline viewpoints and woodland habitats for flamingos, pelicans, raptors, and smaller forest species.
- Baboon Cliff and scenic lookouts: Pause at designated viewing areas for exceptional panoramas, especially in softer morning light.
- Makalia Falls: Visit the southern waterfall when road and weather conditions permit; seasonal water flow changes the experience.
- Approved walks: Short walks are limited to designated visitor areas or specially authorized ranger-guided activities. Independent bush walking is not permitted.
- Special water and nighttime activities: KWS lists lake boating and night game drives among its bookable special activities. They are not routine inclusions: operating permissions, approved providers, water conditions, and safety requirements must be confirmed first.
- Community experiences: We will arrange respectful, locally hosted cultural or craft visits outside the park.
Entrance Fees
KWS currently publishes the following daily park-entry fees per person (valid for 24-hours):
- International non-residents: USD 90 adult; USD 45 child.
- Other African citizens: USD 50 adult; USD 25 child.
- East African citizens: KES 1,500 adult; KES 750 child.
- Kenya residents: KES 2,025 adult; KES 1,050 child.
Children under the age of 3 can enter for free (child rates apply for ages 3 to 17). You will have to produce valid ID for the type of visitor you are, and additional charges might apply for vehicles, accommodation, guides, or special activities. All payments must be made via the official KWS Pay or eCitizen system before your arrival. We will check the most current fees and incorporate them into your safari quote.
What to Expect
Early starts, cold highland mornings, and more crowded roads at holidays can all be expected. Although the park has short driving routes and is therefore suitable for families and those who are visiting for the first time, there is no guarantee of seeing wildlife.
Take along neutral-coloured clothes, a fleece or a jacket, comfortable closed shoes, sunscreen, binoculars, and insect repellent. Take a camera with a telephoto lens and extra batteries and use quiet settings when near sensitive animals.
If you want some health advice, you should ask a travel clinic about vaccinations, malaria precautions and the entry requirements for Kenya. Cell phone service may differ from one area to another. We will inform families of the children's policies at each lodge, and guests who have limited mobility should let us know before booking whether the rooms, vehicles, toilets and viewpoints are accessible.
KWS opens the gates for day visitors at 6:00 a.m. and shuts them at 6:00 p.m. Visitors should remain in their vehicles unless they are in designated areas, and one must not suppose that the lakeshore roads are open following heavy rain.
Possible Safari Combinations
- Nakuru and Lake Naivasha (3–4 days): Combine rhino drives with an authorized boat excursion on freshwater Lake Naivasha and a visit to Hell’s Gate National Park.
- Nakuru and Maasai Mara (5–6 days): Follow birdlife and rhinos with open-plains game viewing and, seasonally, the Great Migration.
- Nakuru, Elementaita, and Soysambu (3–5 days): Explore Rift Valley wetland habitats, a separately managed conservancy, and secluded lodge settings.
- Nakuru, Maasai Mara, and Diani Beach (9–12 days): Balance a wildlife-focused itinerary with Indian Ocean relaxation, allowing time for flight connections.
