Experience the Untamed Soul of Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park presents one of Kenya's most well-known safari sights: elephants crossing the open plains under Mount Kilimanjaro. However, the park has many features beyond that famous photograph. The presence of permanent wetlands, seasonal lakebeds, acacia woodland, a rich variety of birdlife and the adjoining Maasai landscape give this small park a highly diverse character.

Amboseli can also be easily combined with Nairobi and other places in Kenya for families, couples, photographers, and first-time safari visitors, and at Halo Safaris & DMC, we can organize private transfers, accommodation, professional driver-guides, and a custom safari in Amboseli as part of a larger itinerary.

Location & Amboseli National Park Distance from Nairobi

Amboseli is situated in Kajiado County in southern Kenya, near the border with Tanzania. The distance from Nairobi to Amboseli National Park depends on the route you take and the entrance gate you use. The Kenya Wildlife Service gives the figure of about 204 km when travelling via Emali to Iremito Gate and 220 km when going via Namanga to Meshanani Gate. When planning a practical itinerary, allow about 4 to 5 hours by road, depending on traffic, stops and the condition of the roads.

Light-aircraft services are scheduled to operate from Wilson Airport in Nairobi. Although KWS lists Kimana as the tarmacked light-aircraft airstrip for the park, it should be noted that airstrip names in airline schedules can differ, and therefore the actual airstrip in use should be confirmed when making a booking.

Brief History of Amboseli

Amboseli was set aside as part of the Southern Reserve for the Maasai in 1906, became a game reserve in 1948, and was gazetted as a national park in 1974. The wider landscape was recognized as a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve in 1991. Amboseli National Park was also placed on Kenya's UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2023.

The name Amboseli comes from the Maasai word Empusel, which refers to a salty and dusty place, a description that fits well with the pale lakebed and the semi-arid basin.

How to Get to Amboseli National Park

The most frequently used route from Nairobi is to go along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway as far as Emali and then head towards the Amboseli ecosystem. Whether it's depending on the lodge you've chosen and the itinerary you've decided upon, entry can be made at either Iremito or Kimana Gate. There is also an alternative route which goes via Namanga to Meshanani Gate.

The main highways are paved but a few of the final access roads and park tracks may become dusty, corrugated or muddy following heavy rain. It is advisable to use a safari 4x4 for greater comfort and flexibility.

We can arrange pickup from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Wilson Airport, a Nairobi hotel or another safari destination, with private transfers coordinated around flight arrivals and lodge check-in times.

Wildlife & Terrain: What Makes Amboseli Special

The main attraction at Amboseli is the elephant. These large herds often pass through the open plains and wetlands and at times offer excellent photographic opportunities with Kilimanjaro in the background.

People may also see lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, gazelles and a large number of smaller species. The KWS lists over 400 species of bird, which makes the park particularly enjoyable for bird watchers.

The landscape shifts quickly between dusty plains, seasonal Lake Amboseli, marshes, swamps, acacia woodland, and open savannah. Underground water from the area around Kilimanjaro helps keep the wetlands alive even during dry times.

In the dry season wildlife usually gather around dependable water supplies, while in the more vegetated months they are able to spread out over the wider ecosystem.

Conservancies, Communities & Responsible Tourism

The situation at Amboseli cannot be fully understood simply by looking at the area within the park; wildlife moves through a much larger ecosystem that includes the Maasai community lands, the conservancies and the migration corridors.

UNESCO has identified major corridors that connect Amboseli with Olgulului, Kimana, Kuku and the Chyulu landscape, allowing elephants and other animals to move between their feeding and watering areas during the seasons.

Community-led visits can give tourists a chance to become familiar with Maasai traditions and with modern pastoral life. It is important to select experiences which are arranged at the local level, to respect the hosts' consent regarding photography and to ensure that the benefits offered to the host communities are clear and transparent.

It is just as important to carry out long-term conservation efforts. The Amboseli Trust for Elephants carries out research into elephants and also involves the community through its coexistence programmes, scholarships, scouts and training.

What You Can Expect on an Amboseli Safari

On the first afternoon you will see the plains and the wetlands, and during the first full morning you have the chance to look for elephants and to take photographs of Kilimanjaro when the weather is clear.

Observation Hill offers views that span the basin and the wetlands. Photographers ought to choose the early morning and late afternoon, since the light is softer and Kilimanjaro might come out of the cloud.

Unlike places such as the Maasai Mara, Amboseli's attraction is not merely dependent on spotting predators. The park has a visual character unlike any other in Kenya because of the presence of elephants, the wetlands, the open terrain and Kilimanjaro.

Accommodation in Amboseli National Park

Accommodation is available in the form of simple safari camps, comfortable lodges and more intimate luxury resorts.

Guests who are trying to save money should choose simple camping sites and value lodges; families might prefer accommodations that have pools, larger rooms and easy access to the park; meanwhile, couples and honeymooners could opt for smaller luxury camps or private conservancy properties.

At Halo Safaris & DMC, we can design Amboseli safari itineraries according to the comfort level that each guest prefers rather than requiring every guest to stay in the same type of accommodation.

Best Time to Visit & Weather in Amboseli

A safari can be enjoyed in Amboseli National Park throughout the year.

  • From January through February, the weather is usually warm and fairly dry, making it a good time for seeing wildlife and taking photographs.
  • From March through May, there is a long rainy period, as a result of which the landscape turns greener, the number of visitors may decrease and certain tracks might become muddy.
  • From June through October, the drier conditions cause the wildlife to move towards any permanent water sources, and this period is popular for game viewing, especially in the swamps.
  • From November through December, the short rains generally refresh the landscape and lead to dramatic skies, good opportunities for birdwatching and pleasant conditions for photography.

It cannot be guaranteed that Kilimanjaro will be visible; the best times for seeing it are usually in the early mornings and late afternoons.

The national park is about twenty minutes by road, so the game drives involve a transfer to the park.Accommodation and Room OptionsThe lodge has 83 guest rooms offering various bed configurations, such as two queen-sized beds, one king-sized bed, or a single queen-sized bed. Six of the rooms have adjoining doors and, where selected twin rooms are available, triples can be arranged upon request. The gardens contain cottages, and there are verandas where one can read or take a quiet moment. The interiors also have murals inspired by the Maasai, which give them colour and character. The available types of accommodation also consist of a honeymoon suite, two rooms accessible by wheelchair, and a two-bedroom Presidential Suite which has a lounge, a private dining room, a kitchenette and a veranda. When you are making your enquiry, please state your preferred sleeping arrangements, in particular if you are travelling with a family or friends. What Your Stay IncludesOur package includes accommodation, the confirmed meal plan, transport, an English-speaking driver-guide, the scheduled game drives, the park entry fees and the specified transfers. The specific inclusions will vary according to your quotation; extra charges may apply for drinks, laundry, cultural visits and special dining. Just booking a room does not mean that a safari vehicle or entry to a national park will be included.Facilities and AmenitiesThe swimming pool offers a refreshing break, and there is also a lounge, a restaurant, bars, an outdoor dining terrace, a gift shop and a local handicraft market. The lodge provides laundry services, has board games, features a children's pool and offers Wi-Fi in the public areas. It is possible to combine wildlife excursions with some relaxed afternoons thanks to these facilities. You could swim, look around at the local crafts or just relax in the lounge. Make sure to mention any essential facilities before making your booking so that you can check their current availability.Dining at Amboseli Sopa LodgeThe Kibo Restaurant is named after the highest peak of Kilimanjaro, and the Mawenzi Terrace provides outdoor dining under a big acacia tree, incorporating the surrounding scenery into the dining experience.Make sure to confirm your meal plan and state your dietary requirements as early as possible since vegetarian preferences, allergies and children's needs are easier to accommodate when there is advance notice. If you are going on full-day game drives, enquire about packed meals or appropriate lunch options. Similarly, for bush dining, sundowners and private meals, you need to check that they are available, what their location is and also the extra costs involved.Activities and ExperiencesThe main attraction in Amboseli National Park is game driving; in the morning you have the chance to explore the wetlands and see the elephants move, and in the afternoons the changing light brings with it new possibilities for wildlife. The lodge offers nature walks, birdwatching, outdoor dining, sundowners and traditional dances. Please check the availability for the dates of your trip.A visit to Maasai cultural sites that is organised by the local community can provide another viewpoint on the trip. Find out information about the hosts, the format of the visit, and the fees.Nature walks are different from walking safaris in the park, and if you want to go on a balloon trip, you must get separate confirmation regarding local availability and make the necessary arrangements.Wildlife and the Safari ExperienceIt is the elephants that make up the Amboseli experience; when you have the time to watch their behaviour instead of rushing from one sight to another, seeing a family of them across the plains becomes particularly enjoyable. The wildlife found here also consists of buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and antelopes, together with the possibility of searching for predators. In the area surrounding the wetlands, waterfowl and grazing animals create a quite different atmosphere. From Observation Hill, one can get a wider view of the landscape. How to Get ThereBy Road from NairobiThe lodge is about 250 kilometres from Nairobi, and the journey takes three to four hours. The majority of the route is paved, while the last four kilometres are along an all-weather murram road. You should allow extra time for traffic and for stopping.By AirFlights from Nairobi last about thirty to forty minutes, after which there is a one-hour transfer from the Amboseli airstrip to the lodge. Our representative will suggest transport options suitable to your itinerary when you are travelling from Mombasa, Diani or another safari destination.Best Time to StayThe drier periods, which occur from January to February and from June to October, are the ones most commonly chosen for wildlife watching. While the wetter months do result in more green landscapes and can be rewarding for birdwatching, they may mean that the road conditions require a more flexible approach.Suitability of the LodgeThe Amboseli Sopa Lodge is suitable for tourists looking for cottage-style accommodation, shared leisure facilities and a traditional lodge atmosphere and can be considered by couples, families, photographers, individual travellers, groups and those who are going on safari for the first time.Couples have the opportunity to combine their wildlife drives with some peaceful afternoons, families can make use of the flexible room arrangements, and groups may enjoy having shared meals as well as coordinated excursions.Family and Child InformationThe lodge provides connections between rooms as well as a choice of triple room arrangements for those looking for family-friendly options. It also has a children's menu, a children's pool and babysitting services. It is necessary to check before you arrive whether babysitting is available, what the fees are, and how the arrangements should be made. When asking for the rates, you must give the children's ages since the room suitability and the prices are based on age and the number of people occupying the room.A family schedule can be made more comfortable by taking shorter drives, having meal breaks and spending time in the pool. It is important to check the activity restrictions and to keep an eye on the children when they are around the premises and the swimming pool.Practical InformationBefore finalizing your transfers, make sure you have confirmed your check-in and check-out times. Take with you a suitable charging adaptor, some spare camera batteries and a power bank. Wi-Fi is available in the public areas; if necessary, check that your room has coverage and that the connection is good. Guests who have mobility needs should talk with regard to the bathroom layouts, the paths, access to dining and vehicle transfers as well as the accessibility of the room.Nearby AttractionsAmboseli National Park is still the principal attraction, featuring wetlands, open plains and Observation Hill; cultural visits organized by the local community can enhance the wildlife experience. When it comes to visiting nearby sanctuaries or conservancies, separate arrangements, permissions, and fees must be obtained where these are required. Although Kilimanjaro offers a beautiful background, the actual climbing of the mountain needs its own Tanzania itinerary.Suggested Length of StayWith two nights, you have an introductory safari together with a full day in the Amboseli area, while three nights give you a more relaxed balance between wildlife drives and time at the lodge. For photographers or families who prefer short trips, an extra night might be suitable, as it gives more chances of seeing Kilimanjaro when the weather clears.Combine Amboseli with Other DestinationsYou can combine a visit to Amboseli with one to Tsavo in order to experience contrasting landscapes, or else go on to Diani for some beach relaxation. Longer trips may also involve the Maasai Mara, Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru, Samburu or Laikipia.Look at our multi-destination Kenya safaris, which offer itineraries that balance travel time with pleasant stays. Do not pack in too many destinations during a short holiday. The itinerary can be altered to match the speed at which you like to travel. What to Know Before BookingMake sure that the room category, meal plan, parking charges, transport arrangements and cancellation terms are confirmed, and state your dietary requirements, accessibility needs and any special occasions as early as possible. The prices will vary according to the dates of travel, the number of occupants, and the details of the package. The Game Package includes bush breakfasts or lunches and sundowner stops, charged separately under Full Board. We review dietary requirements and special dining requests before booking.Getting to Know Amboseli’s ElephantsGuides at Elewana Tortilis Camp know individual elephants and their family histories, helping you understand relationships within the herd. Their knowledge also extends to resident lion territories and other local wildlife.Game drives explore Amboseli National Park and the 30,000-acre Kitirua Conservancy, which the camp has exclusive access to. Guides’ knowledge of hyena dens, seasonal flowers and migratory birds adds depth to each outing beyond the larger wildlife.Open-sided Toyota Land Cruisers provide three seating rows, camera-support beanbags and charging sockets. Drives are shared unless exclusive vehicle use is arranged. On a Kenya photography safari, choosing the destination, light and time spent at each sighting helps you get the shots you want.Walking with Maasai GuidesLocal community walking guides have extensive knowledge of these plains. On foot, they highlight tracks, dung beetles, and plants often missed from vehicles. They also explain traditional uses of wild herbs and bark and share insights into Maasai life. This experience offers a deeper understanding of the landscape. We tailor the walk’s length and arrangements to participants’ ages, interests and abilities. For more information on guided walks, suitable destinations and what to expect, refer to our Kenya walking safari guide.Children’s Discoveries at TortilisChildren can explore, learn and create beyond the game-drive vehicle. Camp walks encourage observation, while warrior and bush training teach skills from Maasai life. Jewelry making offers a hands-on introduction to Maasai beadwork.School visits introduce children to the local community, with arrangements agreed with the hosts. Children’s menus and flexible dining times accommodate family schedules, while swimming provides a break between outings. We confirm activities according to each child’s age and interests.Pool Afternoons and MassagesThe main pool is set in gardens shaded by palms and acacias, with birds throughout the grounds. Bar service and board games make it a welcoming place to spend an afternoon after a morning drive or walk. Massages offer another way to relax, especially after travel or time in safari vehicles.Honeymoons, Weddings and CelebrationsFor couples, a veranda overlooking Kilimanjaro, bush breakfasts and sunset drinks provide varied settings for time together. Reserving an afternoon for leisure lets you enjoy the pool or book a massage instead of scheduling excursions every day.Tortilis has hosted weddings, symbolic ceremonies and vow renewals, from intimate gatherings to multi-day celebrations. Options include champagne after a game drive and larger events where guests reserve the entire camp. Legal ceremonies and blessings require specific arrangements, which we discuss based on your occasion.SustainabilityThe camp operates entirely on solar power. Its community approach includes employing and training local residents for guiding and hospitality roles, providing the surrounding community with a direct connection to the camp’s operations.Local guides enhance your visit with their knowledge of the landscape and Maasai traditions. The Elewana Collection also supports community and environmental initiatives throughout its properties.Seasons and Length of StayJune to October and January to February typically bring drier conditions, easier travel on park tracks, and increased wildlife activity around water sources. However, these months can also be dusty.Wetter months bring greener scenery and good birdwatching, including migratory species. April and May may present challenging road conditions after heavy rain. Clouds often obscure Kilimanjaro, but views can be striking when the rain clears the dust. Early morning and late afternoon provide good chances to spot the summit. Two nights suit a focused Amboseli visit. Three nights leave more time for drives, a walk, bush breakfast and relaxation.Continuing Beyond AmboseliTortilis can serve as the Amboseli chapter of a journey through other Elewana properties, such as Elsa’s Kopje in Meru and Elephant Pepper Camp or Sand River in the Maasai Mara. The collection also offers beach accommodations for travelers who want to conclude their trip by the coast. Our Kenya safari itineraries provide starting points for these combinations. We coordinate travel connections and ensure enough time to enjoy each destination, rather than just adding more stops.Make Your Amboseli Visit More Than a Game Drive An elephant drive does not need to define your entire visit. At Elewana Tortilis Camp, you can tour with a Maasai guide, enjoy breakfast outdoors, and relax by the pool during warmer hours.Inform your dedicated travel expert about your preferred experiences, travel party, and how Amboseli fits into your plans. We will recommend suitable accommodation and packages, with transport and fees clearly detailed in your quotation.Plan your safari to include Tortilis Camp.
