Aberdare National Park
Experience the Untamed Soul of Aberdare National Park
Brief introduction
Mist passes through the tall trees, waterfalls fall into the deep valleys, and elephants come out of the forest around the quiet waterholes. In Aberdare National Park, you have a special kind of Kenyan safari, with the mountain scenery being just as significant as the wildlife.
We offer tailored trips to the highlands which include private game drives, visits to special forest lodges, scenic walks, and carefully selected safari add-ons. We organize your transfers, guides, and places to stay according to what is most important to you.
Brief history
For many years, the Aberdare Range has supplied central Kenyan communities, including the Kikuyu, with water and forest resources, and a park was established in 1950 to protect part of this volcanic mountain area and its important watersheds.
The forests also have a connection with Kenya's struggle for independence, as they are associated with the Mau Mau fighters. When her father, King George VI, died in 1952, Princess Elizabeth was at Treetops and thus became Queen Elizabeth II, and this caused the tree lodges in the area to gain world fame.
Today conservation efforts are aimed at protecting both the wildlife and the forests that the nearby communities rely on.
Location and getting there
The park is situated to the west of Mount Kenya, primarily in the Nyeri and Nyandarua highlands. Access to the eastern forest can be gained via Nyeri and Mweiga, while Njabini and Naivasha serve as useful entrances to the western and southern mountain regions.
Nairobi is 150 to 190 kilometres (93 to 118 miles) away, and by road the journey takes between three and five hours, the length of time depending on the entrance taken; the headquarters of the park is 15 kilometres from Nyeri and some of the western routes lie two to three hours' drive from Naivasha.
Choose the entrance gate depending on your intentions. The gates at Ark and Treetops are most suitable for the forest and lodge sections, while those at Kiandongoro and Mutubio are appropriate for accessing moorland viewpoints and hiking trails. You should bear in mind that road conditions and gate access may change following rain.
It is possible to travel by scheduled light aircraft from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Nanyuki, the journey usually lasting around an hour, after which you can go by road. Although Mweiga Airstrip is nearer, it is not used for regular flights and requires advance arrangement for private charters. We will be able to arrange ground transfers or charter flights for you.
Wildlife & Terrain
When considering Aberdare, you should not forget its two principal types of landscape: the lower, forested area known as the Salient, which is excellent for watching animals at the waterholes, and the higher moorlands featuring open ridges and extensive views. The landscape is always interesting because of the presence of bamboo, mountain forest, giant heather, cool streams, and rocky outcrops.
Look out for these animals
- Elephants and buffalo: Regular highlights around forest clearings and waterholes.
- Bushbuck, waterbuck, and giant forest hogs: Rewarding sightings among trees and damp clearings.
- Black-and-white colobus monkeys: Easily recognized by their striking coats and long white tails.
- Leopards and black rhinos: Present, but elusive; sightings should never be guaranteed.
- Mountain bongos: Extremely rare antelopes of dense forest, not realistic targets for an ordinary game drive.
Birdwatchers may encounter colorful sunbirds, turacos, and mountain raptors. Unlike the Maasai Mara, for landscape photographers, Karuru and Chania waterfalls, the Dragon Teeth rock formations, and drifting cloud banks are major attractions.
Best time to visit
January to February and June to September usually have drier roads and better conditions for hiking and sightseeing. Animals often come to lodge waterholes all year, especially during quieter times.
Rain is possible at any time of year. March to May is usually very wet, and October to November can also bring heavy showers. Be ready for sudden mist, cold evenings, and slippery paths, even if the day starts out clear.
High-season lodge demand can increase rates, while selected wetter months may offer better accommodation value and excellent birdwatching. We help you choose dates that match your interests, preferred lodge, and tolerance for changing weather.
Activities to do
On forest game drives, you can search for elephants, buffalo, monkeys, and sometimes for the shy predator.
If you want to see wildlife at a waterhole, you can stay at a forest lodge such as The Ark, which has special decks enabling you to watch the animals arriving and departing without having to drive around.
For those interested in sightseeing at the waterfalls, you may visit the scenic viewpoints at Karuru and Chania Falls, provided that the weather and road conditions are suitable.
For guided hiking, you can walk on the approved trails close to Elephant Hill or Mount Satima with a ranger or a guide; the trails vary from moderate to challenging.
When birding, take photographs of forest birds, waterfalls, moss-covered trees, and the dramatic mountain scenery.
Conservancies, Communities & Responsible Tourism
The Aberdare ecosystem covers more than just the national park. It also includes protected forests, wildlife sanctuaries, and key conservation projects. The Kenya Wildlife Service manages the national park, while the Kenya Forest Service takes care of the nearby forest reserves. Both organizations work closely with local communities to protect endangered wildlife, preserve vital water sources, and encourage sustainable tourism.
Conservation Areas and Their Highlights
- The Aberdare Forest Reserve surrounds the national park and is known for its dense native forests, stunning mountain views, and diverse wildlife. It provides important habitats for elephants, buffalo, colobus monkeys, forest birds, and many other animals. Visitors can join guided nature walks, go birdwatching, or take photos in certain areas with the right permissions. The reserve also protects key water sources and supports local forest conservation projects.
- The Rhino Ark Conservation Initiative helps protect the Aberdare ecosystem with its 400-kilometre (249-mile) conservation fence. This project, created with the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Kenya Forest Service, and local communities, protects endangered black rhinos and elephants and helps reduce conflicts between people and wildlife. The initiative also focuses on forest protection, wildlife monitoring, and community education.
- Solio Game Reserve, located between the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya, is a privately run wildlife sanctuary known for its successful black and white rhino conservation. Visitors can enjoy exclusive game drives, birdwatching, and wildlife photography, with chances to see rhinos, buffalo, zebras, and other plains animals against a beautiful mountain backdrop. Solio is a great addition to any Aberdare safari, but visits must be arranged in advance.
Responsible Tourism & Community Engagement
Tourism benefits local guides, community forest groups, conservation projects, and area businesses. By choosing responsible cultural experiences, visitors can connect with local communities and help support traditional ways of life through fair compensation.
We encourage responsible travel by recommending authorized guides, eco-friendly accommodations, and sustainable safari practices. Visitors should keep a safe distance from wildlife, stay on marked trails, minimize plastic waste, and always ask permission before photographing local people.
Join our conservation-focused safari experiences or explore other Kenya safari packages that blend amazing wildlife encounters with real conservation efforts.
What to expect
You can expect cool mornings, changing mountain weather, and the need for patience when watching wildlife. Forest sightings might be quick, but if you wait by a waterhole, you could see more animals. Most visitors find one or two nights comfortable, but staying longer lets you see more water
When packing, use neutral colors, take a waterproof jacket, sturdy closed shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and binoculars. Take extra camera batteries and a zoom lens if you are going to be looking at wildlife, and use a wide lens when photographing waterfalls. Keep your equipment safe from mist and avoid using the flash near animals. The mobile signal and Wi-Fi will differ depending on the location.
Get travel health advice about vaccines, malaria prevention, and the right insurance. Always follow ranger instructions, stay away from elephants and buffalo, and only get out of your vehicle where it’s allowed.
