Mount Kenya National Park
Experience the Untamed Soul of Mount Kenya National Park
Brief introduction
In Mount Kenya National Park, the true pleasure lies in witnessing the way the landscape changes from forest to moorland and then to rocky alpine regions.
We provide skilled local guides, well-paced hikes, accommodation in the highlands, and various safari possibilities, allowing you to choose between a mild walk on a lower slope or a multi-day trek to Point Lenana according to your fitness level.
Brief history
Mount Kenya is an old volcano which has been carved out into sharp valleys by glaciers and remains a significant cultural site for the Kikuyu and Meru groups.
The forest reserve was set up in 1932, and the national park was established in 1949. It was given the status of Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1978 and that of World Heritage Site in 1997. Lewa and Ngare Ndare were included in the World Heritage area in 2013.
Location and getting there
The park is situated in central Kenya close to the equator and lies approximately 200 kilometres (125 miles) northeast of Nairobi; access from the north and west is available through Nanyuki and Naro Moru, respectively, while Chogoria is the point of entry from the east.
Three principal gates lead toward established trekking routes:
- The Sirimon Gate is about 200 kilometres from Nairobi and can be reached by taking the road from Nanyuki to Meru.
- Naro Moru Gate is about 188 kilometres from Nairobi, via the Nyeri–Nanyuki route.
- Chogoria Gate is located on the Embu–Meru side, about 210 kilometres from Nairobi.
The journey by road from Nairobi takes between four and six hours, with this duration depending on your specific route and the gate you decide to use.
Scheduled flights from Wilson Airport to Nanyuki take approximately an hour, after which a road transfer is needed. Private charters are also an option for flexible travel.
We will arrange for you the entry gate, the transfers, the mountain support team, and your accommodation before your trip.

Wildlife & terrain
The montane forests and bamboo give way step by step to moorland, glacial valleys, and exposed rock. Batian is the highest peak, reaching a height of 5,199 metres (17,057 feet), while Point Lenana, at 4,985 metres (16,355 feet), is the primary trekking summit.
You can spot elephants, buffalo, bushbuck, monkeys, forest hogs, and at times leopards in the lower forests. Although rare, bongos live in the broader forest area; they are very difficult to see. In the higher regions, look out for rock hyraxes, sunbirds, alpine chats, and raptors.
You can photograph giant groundsels, lobelias, Lake Michaelson, and the sunlit cliffs.
Best time to visit
The trails are usually drier and the morning views clearer in January and February, which is why these months are popular for trekking. July through September is also a good time, although the nights at high altitude can be quite cold.
The long period of rainy weather generally lasts from March to May, with shorter rains occurring from October to December as well. Mountain weather is always difficult to predict since mist, hail, rain or freezing temperatures may occur even on sunny days.
Forest walks at a lower altitude are particularly pretty in the greener seasons since there are many flowers and birds. The prices may vary depending on holiday demand and the availability of guides.
Activities to do
With guided day hikes, you can explore the forest and the moorland without having to climb to the summit, and this kind of hike is ideal for tourists who wish to include mountain walks in their broader Kenya safari.
The trek to Point Lenana usually lasts between four and six days when carried out at a comfortable pace. The Sirimon route is more gradual, Chogoria is famous for its lakes and views, and Naro Moru is steeper, more direct and often muddy.
Specialist guides, ropes, equipment, and actual climbing experience are needed if one is to carry out technical mountaineering on Batian and Nelion, since these peaks are not ordinary hiking summits.
If you are interested in birdwatching and taking nature photographs, then visit the lower forests to spot rare and highland species or take pictures of the waterfalls, alpine plants, and tall rock formations.
You have the option of camping in bandas on the approved routes, where you can enjoy the starry skies and views of the sunrise.
Conservancies, Communities & Responsible Tourism
The Mount Kenya National Park is included within a bigger conservation area that also comprises the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and the Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve, all of which have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This network of protected areas contributes to the preservation of biodiversity, supports local communities, and ensures that wildlife corridors remain open.
- The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is located on the northern foothills of Mount Kenya and is famous for its efforts to protect endangered species such as black and white rhinos, Grevy's zebras, elephants, and various other animals. Visitors have the opportunity to take part in guided game drives, take photographs of the wildlife, and find out about Lewa's work in the areas of education, healthcare, and the support of local livelihoods. Additionally, you can explore our luxury Kenya fly-in safaris.
- The Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve is a native forest well known for its attractive waterfalls, its clear blue pools, and the presence of a high canopy walkway. Visitors are able to go on guided walks, watch the birds, and have fun with scenic photography. The forest also serves as an important wildlife corridor linking Mount Kenya and Lewa, helping elephants and other animals move safely between their habitats.
Responsible Tourism and Community Engagement
Tourism provides support for local guides, porters, community forest groups and conservation projects. we encourage responsible travel by paying fair wages, employing authorized guides, sticking to the marked trails, reducing our plastic waste and respecting wildlife habitats. We also organise cultural experiences with local hosts so as to establish meaningful links which are beneficial to the surrounding communities.
Explore our Kenya safari packages and enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Mount Kenya as well as some unforgettable wildlife and conservation experiences.
Entrance fee
The Kenya Wildlife Service determines the entry fees according to residency and age. A non-resident adult has to pay USD 70 and a non-resident child USD 35 for each applicable entry period. The published fees for citizens of East Africa are KES 800 for adults and KES 400 for children.
The amounts mentioned are the conservation fees for the park and not the full cost of a mountain trek; overnight journeys can also involve charges for accommodation or camping, as well as for guides and porters, transport, equipment, and special activity permits.
What to expect
A normal day in the mountains begins early in order to have clearer skies; downhill walks can take a few hours, whereas multi-day treks involve continuous uphill hiking, staying in basic huts or tents, and experiencing much colder nights. Attempts to reach the summit of Point Lenana usually start before dawn.
Carry waterproof clothes, some warm layers, gloves, solid hiking boots, sun protection, a headlamp, and water. Binoculars and extra camera batteries should also be packed since batteries lose their charge quickly in cold weather. A lens that can be adjusted is useful for viewing both landscapes and wildlife.
Because of the high altitude, careful planning is necessary. Even if you are fit, you could develop altitude sickness, so choose a route that gives you enough time to get used to the elevation and inform your guide immediately if you experience headaches, nausea, or shortness of breath.
Mobile phone signal is poor at higher altitudes, and while lower-level hikes are suitable for families it is necessary to have proper fitness for summit treks. You should discuss your mobility requirements and age limits before booking.

For game drives directly from your lodge, choose an in-conservancy property.Reaching Nanyuki and the propertyAberdare Prestige & Royal Cottages is about 1 km from Nanyuki Airstrip and a short drive from Nanyuki town. They can then continue north to Samburu or transfer to a Laikipia conservancy for a more immersive safari experience. This itinerary offers a straightforward sequence: arrival or stopover in Nanyuki, an optional day trip, followed by a wildlife-focused stay in Laikipia or Samburu. We coordinate transfers, conservancy entry times, and accommodation arrangements to minimize backtracking.Families, self-drive travelers and eventsRoyal Family and Villa Cottages offer families, friends and small groups shared living areas, avoiding separate standard rooms.
